Organic MultiVitamins: Why Food Based Supplements Are Best

organic multivitamins

Organic multivitamins are vitamins that are made from nutrients that are grown without chemicals, including fertilizers, pesticides and more. The important thing to get verified from a brand you consider is that there are no chemicals involved after the foods are grown, in the processing to make the vitamins.

I mention getting proof of supplements being organic after hearing a story about carrots. These were organic grown carrots. And then, during processing to get into the bags we buy at the grocery store, the carrots went through about 12 different treatments that introduced chemicals into the organic product. The same came happen to other organic foods and supplements.

The other, and just as important, requirement you should have for the vitamin supplements that you take are that they be food-based. This is because it is close to the way you consume food for nutrition – the way the nutrients are found in nature – and the way your body will absorb and utilize the nutrients best. Synthetic, or chemical based vitamins, are not going to give you the same results as natural, food-based supplements. And isn’t the purpose of taking vitamins and other supplements is to get good results?

Let’s take a look at why we should consider taking organic, food-based multivitamins – how they can help us build better health. We can start with this video.

Natural Nutrition Month

We talked in a previous post about Americans being over-fed and yet under-nourished. That is so much more than a statement. It is affecting health care in general in our country. It’s affecting the every day life of people in terms of quality of life, health struggles, all kinds of annoying symptoms like low energy, fatigue, getting sick often due to poor immune systems, overweight, obesity, joint pain, stress, stomach pain, bowel problems, other digestive issues and so much more.

Let’s look at some things we know. Our bodies can’t produce many of the nutrients we need. So you have to get them from food or from supplements. Much of our food today lacks nutrition and synthetic supplements are not like real food – so we have problems within this area.

Even if you think you eat well, most people find that they don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables when they start to officially track what they eat each day. Nutrients we are especially lacking:  B vitamins, Omega-3 oils (EPA/DHA), antioxidants, vitamin D and magnesium.

Some people are getting symptoms from being low or deficient in nutrients. Doctors are testing and finding low levels in blood test of their patients. One of the reasons for deficiencies is the amount of processed foods we eat. White flour and white sugar depletes vitamins from your body. Stress also negatively impacts nutrition levels in our bodies.

Last, we live in a world full of chemicals. Our environment is getting more toxic all the time. We can’t control what we breathe or certain other ways chemicals get into our bodies. We can choose to limit chemicals in our foods, in our personal care and skin care products and in our home cleaning products.

You may have immediate symptoms of chemical exposure, such as allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems. Long term exposure is just as real because illnesses associated with chemicals and toxins like reproductive illnesses and cancer are life-threatening when we get them.

Organic Multivitamins

We aren’t perfect people and there are going to be days when you don’t eat well. An organic multivitamin, along with other key, food-based, nutritional supplements can be the insurance policy you are looking for to fill in those nutritional gaps that may leave you vulnerable.

A multivitamin is your foundation nutrition supplement and can benefit your body by giving it the basic nutrition it needs. The reason you don’t have to stop there is because your body can benefit from more.

Here are some top supplements that are used to build better health, along with a brief description how you can benefit.  We might sound like a broken record here

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA) have been shown to help lower triglycerides, stroke and heart disease risk, help with blood pressure, and have also been shown to be helpful in dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, depression, asthma, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. All of these reasons are why I take a fish oil supplement every single day.

Vitamin C

Most of us don’t get nearly enough Vitamin C in our diet. It is essential for collagen production, wound healing, the absorption of iron, and our immune system. Since vitamin C is rapidly used in the body, look for a sustained-release form.

Vitamin D

The last few years have seen a lot of talk about Vitamin D, the nutrient many people were told their routine blood tests showed very low levels. Vitamin D is essential for calcium metabolism; if you want healthy bones you need vitamin D. Vitamin D also supports our immune system and having optimum blood levels of Vitamin D may be helpful in cardiovascular health and may reduce your risk of certain cancers, and even depression.

B-Vitamins

B Complex has been my favorite vitamin for a very long time.. it’s famously called ‘the Happy Vitamin’! B vitamins help regulate carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. They help with DNA synthesis and repair, help to lower homocysteine, and are helpful for functions from stress management (happy) to energy metabolism.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is not as well known as other nutrients, but it is essential to our health and generally lacking in our diet because we don’t eat enough green leafy vegetables. Vitamin K is essential for bone mineralization, normal blood clotting, and wound healing.

Calcium

We know that calcium is important for bones and osteoporosis is a major concern with our aging society, but calcium is also helpful for maintaining normal blood pressure, and may play a role in weight loss.

Antioxidant

Antioxidants are essential for protecting our bodies against free-radical damage–which may be one of the reasons why we age. The best sources of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables; look for supplements containing vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zinc, and selenium.

Probiotics

Have you seen the flood of commercials about probiotics? It’s no coincidence that we have so many digestive problems in this country. Probiotics are included here with nutrients because they are essential for proper digestive functioning.

Probiotics are microorganisms that support the normal functioning of the whole digestive tract and may reduce the tendencies many have for constipation, diarrhea, excessive gas and even irritable bowel syndrome. Not all probiotics are created equal and some have less than a 10% delivery to the intestines where they are needed to do their work.

Lutein and Lycopene

Well known as beneficial to your eyes, lutein and lycopene are vitamin-like compounds found in food and are great antioxidants. They also support a strong immune system and help maintain overall wellness and long-term health of the eyes, heart, skin and lungs.

I’m going to bookmark this page. It’s late and I need to scoot for bed but these vitamins are essential to learn and keep nearby for reference. I take Omega 3, but not sure if I take enough.

How do you know how much is enough of any vitamin?
